Well its that time of year again where bloggers start gearing up to try and use our combined power to change the world. Last year Blog Action Day rallied bloggers to post about the Environment to see if we could make an impact on what people thought about that subject. I think the image below best describes the results:
This year Blog Action Day is trying to get people to take one day out and think about Poverty. They are inviting bloggers to
…examine poverty from their own blog topics and perspectives, to look at it from the macro and micro, as a global condition and a local issue, and to bring their own ideas, views and opinions on the subject.
So if you have a blog, podcast or even if you just want to donate some money then get over to the Blog Action Day website and get registered!

Well the 2008 Olympics are now well under way. I haven’t really had the chance to keep up with them but something I did manage to watch was some of the opening ceremony. Wow! What a show! I must say I was very impressed. So today I found out the Boston.com have put together a nice selection of photos from the opening ceremony.
So go and check them out. They are amazing.

The other day I wrote an article on my ProgTuts site entitled “PHP Optimization Tips“. Yesterday it became a wee bit controversial with a few people commenting that they didn’t like the article. This was due to someone submitting the article on stumbleupon. So I thought “well at least this will get me some traffic”. Well. It did. I’ll let the picture explain.
We went from an average of 10 visits with a high of 65 visits on Monday to more than 2500 visits yesterday. So I’m pleased we at least got noticed. Although there were a few people commenting obviously a whole load of people read the article that didn’t comment so it might not have been quite as controversial as I thought. Maybe I should write more articles like this in the future.

Well they did it. The guys at Mozilla will be more than happy as today they heard that they officially set the world record for “largest number of software downloads in 24 hours” at 8,002,530 downloads. It’s an amazing achievement not just for Mozilla but for the community as a whole. If you took part don’t forget to get your certificate.

“All models are wrong, but some are useful.”
Wired Magazine the other day published an article about how the data deluge makes the scientific method obsolete. Very interesting reading.
There is now a better way. Petabytes allow us to say: “Correlation is enough.” We can stop looking for models. We can analyze the data without hypotheses about what it might show. We can throw the numbers into the biggest computing clusters the world has ever seen and let statistical algorithms find patterns where science cannot.

Today one of my colleagues asked me to answer two questions for him just for fun. He was interested to see what answers I would give. So I thought I would post them here and see what people think.

Today akamike asked:
how many tabs does the average person (geek) have open on their first/main browse. For some, like me, that’s the morning with a cup of tea/coffee. For others, it’s part of an evening ritual after work.
After some discussion I decided I woud post my answer. I don’t have many tabs open during my morning browse. Rather I use 2 applications. A personal Netvibes home page, and an all-in-one IM app called Digsby.
On Netvibes I use the following widgets:
- Bookmarks
- Local Weather
- 2 Flickr image feeds
- Box.net web storage
- Gmail checker
- Uni PopMail checker
- Google Calendar
- Twitter
- 15+ feeds
On Digsby I use:
- Windows Live IM
- Gmail checker
- Uni PopMail checker
- Twitter
So, like akamike, I ask my readers: How many tabs (or windows) do you find yourself opening when you do your “main” daily browse?
