Google Chrome

Today on my troll through the interweb I came across some interesting news. Tomorrow Google are releasing a new browser called Google Chrome. I was quite amazed I had heard nothing about this so far.

Google Chrome

There are some screenshots available if you want to have a look. It looks to me like a nice mix between IE and Firefox in terms of style and features offered. I only hope they have proper support for W3 standards.

One thing that did sound interesting though was the fact that they have made a new javascript engine called V8.

We also built a more powerful JavaScript engine, V8, to power the next generation of web applications that aren’t even possible in today’s browsers.

So it will be interesting to see how this develops. Could there be a new competitor in the browser wars?

While this does look interesting, we really don’t need another browser in the market. Just because IE6 is on the slow way out doesn’t mean we need to fill it’s place :/

Though, if it supports standards well then I guess it will mean users are more likely to pick a decent browser *coughnotIEcough* since there are more of them on the market.

What I am wondering is how this affects Google’s relationship with Mozilla…

I’m using it just now…it’s pretty nice. As you probably imagined google searches are really fast. One thing I really like about it is the whole task manager idea for each page. It lets you know what pages are misbehaving and from a designer’s point of view, they can see if their page needs a bit of work! The reason that they can have a task manager for each tab is because they run the browser like an operating system so I think it has huge potential to be much more efficient than other browsers.
It looks great too…much less stuff in the way. All the pages I’ve been to seem to render properly too so it looks like the CSS engine is all good.

argh! No sooner do I post that than I realise a big pain in the ass with it!…I can’t use the autoscroll with clicking my mouse button (yno the thing that lets you scroll just by moving the mouse?). Reeeally annoying!
